So, how vital are the patches for Baldur's Gate? The 227mb one absolutely refuses to download, while the game downloaded and installed fine.

Very. There are huge differences between the various versions of the Enhanced Edition, and early versions were rather buggy, as Jac mentioned.

Starter's tip: not every enemy needs to be fought, fleeing is always an option.

Also, is there like a Monk class where it's feasible to not use any weapons? I really wanna punch stuff.

There is a monk class, and it can punch stuff. Just don't expect it to keep up with the fighters on lower levels - the monk really comes into its own later... much later. But man, it becomes a beast when it does!
