Well..I can't link where I get all my stuff and tech advice from due to rules and all but, if the goal is truely freeware, I do suggest the use of linux over Windows or Mac. Especially now Microsoft released all kinds of drivers too the linux community. So we can play a lot more windows games and support any hardware now.

The makers of CCleaner, Defraggler, Recuva and Speccy.
CCleaner or Crap Cleaner is a little free cleaning program, which removes all the temporary garbage that is left by your browser and programs. Has also a registrycleaner, which removes dead registry entries.
Defraggler is the free defragmenting tool. Defrag your harddisk, so that Windows will start fast again. Now also with the option to start before Windows is loaded.
Recuva is a little program that helps to recover lost files. Little files that is, like when you accidentally removed a document. For bigger work you need other kind of programs.
Speccy is a little tool where you can see what's in your pc. It shows the type of processor, mainboard, videocard and so on.

CCEnhancer is an expansion to CCleaner. It adds support for over the 500 new programs for CCleaner.

Battery Care is a free tool which gives you information about the battery in your laptop and it could help with the optimal use of it.

I've long found Gizmo's Freeware to be an excellent resource for high quality freebies. They offer comprehensive reviews and download links to a wide range of free software, from cleanup/tuning to Security to just about anything you could hope to find.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe:
Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion;
I've watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate.
All those moments ... will be lost ... in time ... like tears in rain.
