Ultimate Performance from modded Morrowind & other games

Postby Darknut » Wed Jan 20, 2016 2:09 pm

I bumped my gaming PC up to 24 gigs of ram for Christmas :) This allows me to use a ram disk for games.

Installing MW completely into ram make a massive difference in play-ability especially modded up MW.
It make a even bigger difference with Skyrim than it does with MW... load times are near instant on most stuff.

Any game will run faster in a ramdisk!

There is lots of ram disk software out there that make it easy to move stuff in & out of the ram disk & you obviously need to have everything backed up because the ramdisk is gone when you shut down or reboot.

The Asus ram disk is the best I have tried hands down ... even with Steam it was a couple of clicks & you don't even have to change your desktop shortcuts!

It took less than 2 mins to move 12 gigs to the ram disk.

I already had a solid state HD & the ram disk is still way faster!

It would be hard to go back to the old way of playing after playing with a ram disk!

Only 2 minutes? Transferring data to and from my ramdisk was very time consuming. While I agree everything on the ramdisk is fast as hell, as you said, you have to wait for it to come off at shut down and that was taking a long time on my system.

Disk 0:
120 GB OCZ-VERTEX3 SSD

Disk 1:
1 TB MB1000EBNCF HDD

Disk 2: (game drive)
500 GB Samsung SSD 850 EVO

AMD Phenom II X4 965 Processor, ~3.4GHz
8GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960
1920 x 1080 (32 bit) (60Hz)
Available for weddings, funerals, hand fasting, and baptisms.

As someone who's first computer had 48 MB RAM and loaded off a cassette, I'm still trying to wrap my brain around 24 GB RAM.

I'm using the new Asus ram disk software & it is amazing! I have the same SSD that you have as the system disk & even with the RD set to load on boot it still boots faster than it did with a spinning disk HD & that is 12gigs loading into a 16gig RD!

I don't know how it does it so fast.

Last night I was swapping MW, Fallout 3 & Skyrim in & out of the ram disk & it took the longest for skyrim as it is 12 gigs. 2 min to move the files in & a little less than 2 min to unload them. the other games took less time both ways because they are around 8 gigs each. Certainly fast enough to warrant doing it for any game "big" game.

Unfortunately the only way to get the Asus ram disk at the moment is to get one of their new Motherboards or Gaming machines.
I'm sure they will release it altogether soon. That has been their MO on other stuff they did this with in the past. Or you can probably find it in the wild if you look a bit :whistling: :)

Yeah it is mind numbing sometimes ... my first comp was a Commodore 64!

In 1990 I had Amiga 2000. it was modded up to 32 bit 25 MHz with 8 megs of ram & a 40 meg HD ... it was a Monster at the time & cost a small fortune!

I had a blast with that Computer!

Although my board is an ASRock now, my last one was an ASUS. I actually think I have that software, or ASRock gave me something similar. I might try it again. Maybe that 2 minutes on and 2 minutes off is what seemed like a long time. It would in comparison with normal on off times. Maybe I was just impatient.

I don't understand any of this Darknut..
What exactly are you doing with your computer?

He's setting aside a portion of his system RAM to act as a hard drive, ST, because RAM is faster than any SSD or any other storage medium out there. You need a bit of RAM and special software for it to work, though, plus you have to load whatever game you're playing into the RAM disk before you can play it. According to DN, he's getting faster load times, but your mileage may vary.

I'd go with at least 12, if not more, if your computer an handle it.

Yep, but it's only active while your computer is on. As soon as you shut down, the disk is destroyed, which is why you have to unload anything new in it to the system before you do so.
