Pillars of Eternity

Postby Adul » Thu May 23, 2013 10:27 am

Project Eternity is the latest game Obsidian Entertainment (KOTOR 2, NWN 2, Fallout: NV) is working on. It's an RPG that is primarily influenced by Baldur's Gate and other Infinity Engine games. It was funded via Kickstarter and is scheduled estimated to come out in 2014.

A few weeks ago Obsidian posted a short in-game footage and technical demo that I thought looked quite impressive. If you guys haven't seen it yet, you should check it out (actual in-game footage starts at around 1:45 minutes):

that was very nice, thanks for posting that update. Is the game going to be following the D&D universe?

No, PE will take place in Obsidian's home-grown fantasy world. Sounds interesting from what I've heard about it so far. As I understand it, magic is an important part of the world they've made, and magic is linked to its user's soul. Souls seem to be a central theme to both the setting and the story.

There was another update yesterday, and while I like game mechanics updates and hearing more about the world they're planning Project Eternity to be set it, I'm a mental child and so the updates that are the most compelling to me are the ones with colorful pictures. So here's an area concept they've just put out:

I think it looks great, like a cross between the art styles of BG2 and the IWD series, with a very high level of polish. Quite impressive.

I would sure as heck have my thief detect traps in that room in the upper-right corner.

Looks great. As of late I've been more interested in games coming from Kickstarters, then games from already established companies.
Maybe it's mostly curiosity, but lots of this stuff just reminds you of the good old games.
Keep them simple, and genuine, don't care about you're super duper high definition super poly render 4D model. Just give us fun gameplay, and a good story. :)

Thanks for sharing Adul, looking forward to seeing the end product of this one too.
photobucket sucks... need to upload a new sig.

Project Eternity has just been renamed to the much more fantasy-friendly title of Pillars of Eternity.

More importantly, here's a surprise teaser trailer with a bunch of in-game footage!

Gotta say, I'm liking the look of those combat scenarios. They have really gone out of their way to baldursgateise those spell animations, and I approve wholeheartedly.

Edit: Also, there's this RPS article that has some interesting details on the game's lore.

Oh yeah. I'm glad they stuck with their roots in BG. I can't wait until the game's released, I may just have to pick it up. :shades:

So Obsidian have recently released something they call the Backer Beta for Project Eternity backers. It's a very early, in-progress demo in which you can create a new character, take a predetermined generic NPC party and explore a small part of the game. I've taken a brief look at it, and while it's still very rough around the edges, I'm happy to report that I definitely felt that Baldur's Gate/Icewind Dale vibe the devs were shooting for. Another thing I love about this is how much everything seems to be connected to the world they've invented - it seems like Eternity is going to be a very lore-oriented game, which is great. Still, I don't want to spoil the fun for myself, so after about half an hour of messing around I've decided to quit the beta and wait for the full game, which I believe is still scheduled for Q4 2014.

Below are some screenshots I've taken in this beta.

The PoE release date has been pushed back to early 2015. I'm not surprised, because when I played the beta it felt unready. I'm actually glad about this, they should definitely be taking the time necessary for polishing this game up. Plus I wouldn't have had time to play much this year anyway, so I don't mind the delay.
